LINDSAY 'VALU MART' TOURNAMENT - Thursday September 22, 2011 CHAMPIONS with 50 points: Jim Butler (skip), Linda Butler (vice), Ken Bunner (lead) - Oshawa KEW BEACH 'TOTAL BODY CHIROPRACTIC' PAIRS TOURNAMENT - September 4, 2011 CHAMPIONS with 51+4 pts: Ken Bunner (novice skip) & Paul Twaddell (lead) - 3-14 end games - Oshawa Ken reports: "In this tournament, the skip had to be a novice and the lead had to be an experienced bowler. This was a full tournament with 24 teams (48 competitors) occupying all of the greens. In our case, we nearly 'maxed out' with our score. Although the win was a team effort, Paul Twaddell, who was on fire all day long, should be credited with this win as he consistently drew into the jack in an effortless fashion on every end." 3rd 3 game winner: Ross Wood (novice skip) & Bob Richardson (lead) - Oshawa |

Perfect 8 Ender at Willowdale, September 18, 2011 |
|
Ross Wood (Skip) & Ken Bunner (Lead) competed in the Novice Pairs Tournament at Willowdale Lawn Bowling Club on September 18th, 2011 earning a 'Perfect Eight Ender'. The Tournament was a 3/14 end format. In our third game, we were playing a team from Lindsay. As I stood in the head watching Ross throw his last two bowls I was becoming somewhat anxious and hopeful. I instructed 'Skip Ross' to draw to the jack, attempting to keep everything calm. The opposing Skip was frantically throwing runners to reduce the count against his team. After the last bowl was thrown and after confirming the count with the opposing Lead, I signaled to Ross that we had a 'Perfect 8', first tapping the side of my leg and then signalling with 8 fingers as we are all prone to do in our communications on the green, but not speaking a word. While standing at the far end of the green, the two skips thought I must be mistaken. "You must be kidding", pondered Ross. "You mean five", he quipped. Upon verification by all, Ross and I celebrated with an unassuming, somewhat apologetic, simple nod of accomplishment while both of us wanted to explode with joy. That's one for the personal record book and probably a once-in-a-lifetime event. Those 'hits to the thigh', all eight of them, and the verbal communication following that signal will be a memorable moment for both of us. Much to my surprise, in conversation later, I discovered that 'Skip Ross' and the opposing Skip were completely unaware that there was potential for a 'Perfect 8' sitting in the head as the end progressed. It was a shocking surprise. The tournament could only have been made more perfect for us if we had finished in first place. We ended the day with two wins, losing a close battle on the opener to a team from Willowdale, finishing with a respectable 46 plus 7 points. There were two other teams from the Oshawa LBC competing in the tournament. Keith Olan and Ken Wilson finished ahead of us with 47 plus 1 points. Doug and Marg Edwards also had a good day competing in this strong field of thirty teams from clubs near and far. Some of the clubs represented included: Willowdale, Agincourt, Lindsay, Hanover, Kew Beach, Cosburn Park, & Midland who had the winning team. Ken Bunner |
